Utility Service Upgrades
Service entrance, metering, and switchgear upgrades to support increased electrical load from EV charging, solar, battery storage, or building expansion.
Our Utility Service Upgrades capabilities
Service Entrance & Metering
Main service entrance upgrades from 200A to 4,000A including utility coordination, meter socket replacement, main disconnect installation, and AIC-rated overcurrent protection.
Switchgear & Distribution
Low-voltage switchgear, distribution panels, motor control centers, and feeder circuits for new or expanded loads. We design for present load with future capacity built in.
Utility Application Management
We manage the utility service application process — capacity requests, interconnection filings, transformer procurement coordination, and inspection scheduling. This is the most time-consuming part of any electrical expansion project.
Ideal for these applications
EV Charging Expansions
Adding DCFC or large Level 2 charging loads to a commercial property almost always requires a service evaluation and often an upgrade.
Solar & Storage Interconnection
Bidirectional metering, anti-islanding protection, and export limiting configurations required for solar and battery systems connecting to the utility grid.
Building Expansions
New wings, floors, or tenant spaces requiring increased electrical capacity beyond what the existing service can support.
Industrial Load Growth
Manufacturing and industrial facilities adding new equipment, production lines, or HVAC systems that push existing service capacity.
Our utility service upgrades process
Load Study
Existing demand metering review, proposed new load assessment, and service capacity determination — we tell you exactly what size upgrade is needed before any utility applications are filed.
Utility Application
Service upgrade application submitted to the utility with load data and proposed equipment specifications. We manage all utility communication and follow up regularly.
Design & Permitting
Electrical design drawings and permit application prepared concurrently with utility application to minimize overall project duration.
Construction
Service entrance work coordinated with utility for meter pull, new switchgear and distribution installed, and final inspection obtained before power restoration.
Frequently asked
How long does a utility service upgrade take?
Simple residential-scale upgrades take 2–4 weeks. Commercial service upgrades requiring new transformers or substation work can take 6–18 months depending on utility backlog and equipment lead times. Starting the utility application early is critical.
Do I need to upgrade my service for Level 2 EV charging?
It depends on your current service size and existing load. Many commercial buildings have headroom for a few Level 2 chargers without any service upgrade. A load study — which we provide free for projects over $50K — determines this definitively.
Can you handle both the utility coordination and the electrical construction?
Yes — and this is a significant advantage. When the same contractor manages both the utility coordination and the electrical installation, there are no interface gaps or finger-pointing if something goes wrong.
